EM

Effective Micro-organisms
E.M. is a living liquid concentrate. It is produced in vats from cultivars of over 80 varieties of micro-organism, photosynthetic bacteria, yeasts, lactic acid bacteria and fungi. These populations co-exist symbiotically and include both aerobic
(thrive on oxygen) and anaerobic (oxygen toxic to) species. When a combination of these beneficial micro-organisms proliferates in sufficient numbers in the environment they bring about a rapid regeneration and purification process. The life processes of E.M.s increase anti–oxidation levels and energy concentrations. They feed on otherwise insoluble organic and toxic matter and secrete large amounts of nutrients beneficial to both animals and plants. These include amino and nucleic acids, polysaccharides and vitamins which increase volume and quality of life while suppressing degenerative and
disease producing organisms.

E.M. in Soil

Remarkable results have been achieved in the agricultural use of E.M.
  • promotes germination, growth, flowering, fruiting & ripening of crops
  • enhances the photosynthetic capacity of plants
  • increases the efficiency of organic fertilisers
  • develops the resistance of plants to pests
  • improves the physical, chemical and biological environment of soil
  • suppresses soil born pathogens and pests
  • improves taste
Effective Micro-organisms can rapidly regenerate degraded, barren, broken down soils. Plants grow exceptionally well in soils which are dominated by E.M. Over time the requirement for E.M. declines as they are self propagating so the soil becomes balanced and earthworm and insect populations grow.

E.M is applied at a dilution of 10ml. E.M. /1ltr. water at a rate of 1 litre per square metre at weekly or fortnightly intervals until crop is established.
5 -7 days before planting, E.M. can be applied at a dilution of 20ml. E.M./1ltr. water.
Soak seeds in E.M. solution (dilution 100ml./ 1ltr.water) as inoculation;
  • small seed (e.g. cabbage) - 20- 30 minutes
  • medium seed (e.g. cucumber) - 30-60 minutes
  • large seed (e.g. pumpkin) -2-3 hours
  • Potatoes, yams etc. can be soaked for 5 minutes before planting.

After land preparation, mulch the ground with seed free grass, straw, hay or weeds to a thickness of 3-5 cm. This provides a good environment for E.M., prevents erosion, maintains soil moisture and temperature, provides nutrients and suppresses weeds. Apply E.M. (10ml. E.M./1ltr. water) to mulch to enhance its value.
Weeds also proliferate with the use of E.M. Applications can be carried out in such a way that all the weeds germinate at once, grow rapidly and can be eliminated by hoeing or ploughing before planting the main crop.

Animal Health

E.M. has also been proven to be of benefit in animal husbandry;
  • suppresses foul odours in livestock sheds & septic tanks
  • decreases flies, ticks and other harmful insects
  • reduces stress and enhances immunity against disease
  • enhances animal health and fertility
E.M. added to animal feed in the form of bokashi or liquid (10ml.E.M./1ltr. water) improves the intestinal flora, enhances digestion and suppresses faecal odours. It can also be added daily to clean drinking water – 1% -10% dilution.

Foul odours in livestock barns are caused by harmful microbes which produce substances such as ammonia and hydrogen sulphide. Spraying E.M. suppresses the development of these and enhances hygienic living conditions.
The entire barn or animal house should be cleaned and sprayed once a week with a 1:100 dilution at a rate of 1-2 litres per square metre. If a motorised sprayer is used, increase dilution to 1:1000. Once the foul odour declines the frequency of application can be reduced. In very wet or cold conditions it is better to sprinkle bokashi on animal bedding instead of liquid E.M. (See separate sheet for E.M. Bokashi recipe). Sprinkle 50g. per square metre on animal bedding every 3-5 days until odour is suppressed and then once every 3-4 weeks.

E.M. in Septic Tanks

To ensure the control of bad odours pour E.M. into septic tanks at the rate of 1% of total tank capacity e.g. 1,000 litre tank capacity – add 10 litres E.M.

Household Uses

E.M. is an effective chemical free cleaner for all surfaces including windows, sinks, toilets etc. Apply a 10% dilution with a spray bottle, leave 10-15 minutes and wipe off. For tougher dirt such as ovens a stronger solution can be sprayed on and left for several hours. Mould growing in bathrooms or window ledges is completely eliminated after several applications of E.M. –spray every 3-4 days.

Chlorine Removal

E.M. quickly removes chlorine from treated tap water –add to a dilution of 1:1000.

Cleaning Up Pollution

The ongoing deterioration of the environment, increase of disease in the human and animal populations on the planet and the corrosion of materials of all kinds is caused by the progressive state of oxidation brought about by free radicals. These are produced by waste materials such as exhaust fumes, electric emissions, ionised chemicals and noxious gas from raw sewerage. Two types of E.M. have potential to resolve environmental pollution problems – zymogenic E.M.s which produce anti-oxidants and certain synthesising strains of anaerobic micro-organism which consume contaminants and pollutants.
